I have been here for nearly nine years now.
Can you share with us what where you doing before you joined OSIT?
I actually worked for one of OSIT’s customers doing accounts payable and payroll support.
No no! I applied! Oh It’s very different to now! I started as a receptionist. I think I was in that role for a few months. Then moved through to accounts support and developed that role all the way through until now.
Tell me about that, how has your role and career developed today?
Well, the company is 3 or 4 times bigger than it was when I first started. It’s different in the way that I am not as involved in the data entry these days. It’s more management based, and I have my own team now, which I really enjoy. I’ve always loved working with people, and I love seeing people succeed, so it’s really nice having a team to help them achieve their goals.
I’m a hands-off manager. I don’t like micro- managing, so I check-in with the team each day and then let them get on with their roles in whichever way works best for them. My day to day involves a lot of collaboration with the Partners, support teams, business services team and of course the directors to provide support around the financials for the company.
Do you have a mentor or role model at OSIT? And if so, what’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from them?
I check in with James Sutton (our MD) a lot, and he’s always advised me to be generous with my communication and just always be willing to give something a go – and never be worried about messing up. That support and encouragement is really reassuring, especially when it comes from the MD!
In your opinion what is something that is uniquely OSIT?
Well we actually have a social club logo called Charlie the chicken, which is very unique! In all seriousness, one of our values is “Fun”. But until you’ve been in this environment, you’d probably think “Fun!? Yeah yeah yeah whatever” but when you’re here, it’s actually so fun to be a part of the team. There’s always lots of laughter, I think that’s pretty rare and not something you’re sure to find anywhere else.
Let’s talk growth, we’ve spoken a bit about you levelling up your career: starting out as a receptionist, moving to accounts and now managing your own team, what was OSIT’s role in that development?
Since moving into the management role, James Sutton continues to provide a massive amount of support. I was also enrolled in a management course at the Australian Institute of Management (AIM) to hone my skills and have regular check-ins with our external accountants to bounce ideas around and get their insights and feedback - which is amazing and really beneficial to my development.
I think I can guess your answer on this one... What does a Monday morning feel like for you?
I LOVE Monday’s. Honestly! I love a Monday! It’s a fresh week – I start early on a Monday which is nice and it’s generally the most productive day. Plus, people are always in a good mood after the weekend and quite chatty – it’s just a good vibe around the office.
If you could give applicants one tip to landing a job at Office Solutions IT what would it be?
Obviously the technical skills are very important, but’s that’s all on paper. Your personality and your personal values aren’t, so let them shine through in your application and especially in your interview. That’s how we get to know you and that’s really important.
And finally, can you share one thing you love about working for OSIT?
Well, I was just asked this by an applicant in an interview last week, so I’m well prepared for this one! Hands down, it’s the people. You forget sometimes that you’re at work, because you do have such a good time here. There’s never a dull moment.
